Have your say: Should more universities offer 100% plant-based …

One of Kent’s leading universities recently saw a record number of students vote in favour of introducing all plant-based catering[1] in the coming years. Students at the University of Kent, which operates campuses in both Medway[2] and Canterbury[3], took part in the vote earlier this year.

More than 450 students voted to lobby the university’s catering facilities to supply entirely plant-based food by 2027/2028. It has been said that this was in fact the highest ever voter turnout in Kent Union History.

Due to the fact that the motion is to lobby the university to go 100 per cent plant-based, a total of 16 union and non-union owned outlets could be impacted. However, some KentLive readers are not convinced that the move would be for the better.

In our comments section, one user wrote: “Oh dear. I had great times at Kent Uni, but they would have been badly spoiled by food totalitarians depriving me of my favourite nutritious foods. Won't make one ounce of difference to the planet either.”

Do you agree with the decision of the University of Kent students? Let us know in the comments below[5].

Chris Chudley, 22, from Plant-Based Universities Kent said: "We are completely overwhelmed by the support we have received from students to pass this motion calling for plant-based catering at Kent. It is a relief to see our university acknowledging the student body in calling for this necessary transition towards a safe and secure food system.

“Our campaign will maintain its presence and continue to lobby the university, and take nonviolent direct action where necessary, to ensure the student’s vote is honoured and that affordable, nutritious, and delicious plant-based menus are made available as soon as possible.”

We want to hear from you - should more universities and institutions introduce 100 per cent plant-based catering? Do you think it would be a change for the better or do you feel there should still be the option available for non-plant-based products? Let us know in the comments[6].
