A huge sinkhole has opened up on a Newcastle street causing the road to be closed off.

Stepney Bank was closed after part of the road caved in on Tuesday. The sinkhole appeared close to a number of businesses, including Tattoo Zone, Little Buildings and the Tanners Arms.

Northumbrian Water say investigations are ongoing into what caused the incident with work being carried out to repair the damage.

Some properties were left without water following the incident on Tuesday evening, prompting Northumbrian Water to carry out investigations in the area. Upon arrival the team discovered a burst water main.

On Wednesday morning a large section of the road had been reduced to rubble as workers assessed the damage and carried out repairs.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: “Our teams have been on site at Stepney Bank, Newcastle, today to carry out an emergency repair after customer reports of no water.
