Free Sunday bus travel across Derbyshire all summer long

A new scheme has been announced that will see bus travel around Derbyshire free on most services on a Sunday morning. Local residents and visitors to Derbyshire are being offered free bus rides on summer Sunday mornings[1] in a bid to get people enjoying all the county can offer.

People are entitled to free travel each Sunday until August 27. The scheme funded by Derbyshire County Council will apply from the first bus on a Sunday morning up until those that are due to depart at midday[2].

It does not include night buses or late running Saturday services and only applies to journeys that are wholly within Derbyshire (excluding Derby City). Normal fare applies from midday on Sunday, with single fares being capped at £2.

The free fares are being paid for from the £47 million that the government awarded us to improve bus travel in Derbyshire. Most bus operators across the county[3] are taking part in the scheme.

The scheme applies to the following operators:

For those wanting to get free travel on the popular Transpeak service between Derby and Buxton, they must get on/off the bus at Duffield. Normal fares apply to passengers wishing to travel to or from Derby City, with passengers required to state their destination to the drivers upon boarding.

The remaining summer Sundays are:

  • August 6, 2023
  • August 13, 2023
  • August 20, 2023
  • August 27, 2023

High Peak Buses Operations Manager, Nikos Ntalampiras said: “This is a great time to try the bus as a viable alternative to using the car and help free up the grid-locked roads – bus travel has just got even easier with the introduction of free travel on Sunday mornings in Derbyshire on the Transpeak. Welcome on board.”
