Ford recalls 870000 F-150 pick-ups in US over faulty parking brakes

Ford recalls 870,000 F-150 pick-ups in US over faulty parking brakes that can turn on unexpectedly, causing drivers to lose control and crash

  • Ford is recalling more than 870,000 newer F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. because the electric parking brakes can turn on unexpectedly
  • It's the third recall[1] the company has made in the last two months[2], but the first for the Ford's F-Series pickups
  • Drivers may see a parking brake warning light and a warning message on the dashboard

Ford is recalling more than 870,000 newer F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. because the electric parking brakes can turn on unexpectedly, causing drivers to lose control and crash.

The recall covers certain pickups from the 2021 through 2023 model years with single exhaust systems.

It's the third recall[5] the company has made in the last two months[6], but the first for the Ford's F-Series pickups, which are the top-selling vehicles in the U.S.

The company says in documents posted by government safety regulators[7] Friday that a rear wiring bundle can come in contact with the rear axle housing.

That can chafe the wiring and cause a short circuit, which can turn on the parking brake without action from the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.

Drivers may see a parking brake warning light and a warning message on the dashboard.

Ford says in documents that it has 918 warranty claims and three field reports of wire chafing in North America.

Of these, 299 indicated unexpected parking brake activation, and 19 of these happened while the trucks were being driven.

The company says it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

Dealers will inspect the rear wiring harness.

If protective tape is worn through, the harness will be replaced. If the tape isn't worn, dealers will install a protective tie strap and tape wrap.

Owners will be notified by letter starting September 11.

This isn't the first time this summer the car manufacturer has had to make a recall in the United States.

The company recalled more than 125,000 vehicles over fears that engine failures may cause fires - an extension to one announced days earlier involving more than 140,000 other models.

The recall, confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), includes 86,656 model year 2020-23 Ford Escapes, 35,501 model year 2022-23 Ford Mavericks, and 3,165 model year 2021-23 Lincoln Corsairs.

It came days after Ford issued a statement urging owners of more than 140,000 SUVs to park outside over concerns they can catch fire at any time, even with the engine off.

The concerning bulletin called for those cars, the model year 2015-19 Lincoln MKC, to also be pulled from circulation - days after the Michigan-based motor company pulled more than 175,000 2021-23 Bronco SUVs over a seat belt issue.

According to the firm - which has factories in the US and Mexico - the recall stems over concern of the location of a battery monitor sensor on the relatively new vehicles, which makes it susceptible to damage when parts are repaired.

In the recall notice Ford said the concerns had been flagged with their Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) after the under hood fire allegations.

The CCRG then carried out investigations into the fires throughout March, April and May but have so far been unable to determine the origins of the fires but the recall notice does note they originated near the vehicles' 12-volt batteries.

Owners of impacted SUVs are expected to receive a letter informing them of the recall starting on June 26.

To correct the issue, dealerships will install a fuse to the battery monitor sensor power circuit.
