Footage shows black smoke billow from Port Clarence fire after pile …

Black smoke was spotted pouring from Port Clarence after a pile of tyres set alight in Middlesbrough.

Fire crews were called to Port Clarence Road[1] after reports of tyres on fire on a recreation ground at the rear of Port Clarence. News of the incident spread quickly across social media after black smoke billowing from the fire could be seen across the Teesside area.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the thick black smoke from locations such as Stockton[2], Pallister Park[3], The Headland in Hartlepool[4] and even Roseberry Topping[5]. Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed that two engines were sent to the scene and used two hose reels to put out the fire.

Initial reports suggested that a car was alight – however, the fire service has confirmed it was a pile of tyres. The cause of the incident is not currently known.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade[7] spokesperson said: “We were called to an incident on July 4 at 8.18pm on Port Clarence[8] Road, Middlesbrough[9]. Two fire engines were in attendance from Billingham[10] and Stockton[11]. A large pile of tyres were well alight on the recreation ground at the rear of Port Clarence. Two hose reels were used to extinguish the fire. We left the scene around 9.06pm.”
