Emergency bleed kit cabinet installed at Northampton station
Northampton[1] station now has an emergency bleed kit cabinet, which could save lives.
Community organisation Off the Streets NN, Northampton[2] Town Council and Northamptonshire[3] Police worked together to install the cabinet, which contains a bleed control kit. It is located on the station’s external wall next to to the main pedestrian entrance on Black Lion Hill.

Northampton’s town council has funded seven bleed control kits already, located in premises including the Co-op on Semilong Road, the Sevens Pub on Weedon Road, the Cordwainer Pub on The Ridings, Broadmead Stores on Broadmead Avenue, the Gallery Pub on Farmhill Road, Today’s Local Store on Lindsay Avenue and at the Weston Favell Shopping Centre.
Off the Streets NN provided advice on the best sites for the kits and cabinets. Their locations are on routes between schools and parks and within easy-to-identify buildings, such as pubs, shops and public transport premises.
In the event of a knife crime or accident causing severe bleeding, any person can access the cabinets or kits by phoning 999. The emergency call handler will give the caller simple instructions on how to use the kit, and where to find the nearest kit if the caller can not see one.
Off the Streets NN informs the East Midlands[5] Ambulance Service when a bleed kit is installed.
Elsewhere in Northamptonshire[6], Off the Streets NN has worked with West Northamptonshire Council to provide bleed kits. A map showing their locations of all bleed kits is available on Google Maps.
Similar initiatives have been taken in other locations around the country, including at stations in Dudley[7] and Edinburgh[8].

Councillor Daniel Soan, member of the Community Services Committee at Northampton Town Council, said: “We are proud to be supporting Off the Streets NN with their vital work to distribute bleed control kits across Northampton and we have already funded another two cabinets which will soon be installed at appropriate locations in the town centre.
“This location was chosen due to the volume of people who pass through the train station and surrounding area, as well as its good CCTV coverage and prominence as a well-known landmark within the town centre. Our thanks to London[10] Northwestern Railway for allowing us to install the cabinet at the station.”
Ravaun Jones, coordinator at Off the Streets NN, said: “This is a great partnership approach to equipping our community with life-saving kit which will significantly assist in the event of an emergency and the location at the train station is very easy to find.
“We will continue working with partners to get bleed kits rolled out across Northamptonshire, for the comfort and safety of our current and future generations. Together We Stand – let’s unite and make our community a better place.”
Dan Dalmonego, duty station manager at London[11] Northwestern Railway, said: “Northampton station is proud to support the Off the Streets NN initiative on this. While we hope it will never be required, our station location is ideal in the worst-case scenario.”
