Elderly Cambs woman scammed out of ?10000 by fraudsters
An elderly Cambridgeshire woman has been scammed out of £10,000 after being instructed to go to the bank and withdraw her life savings. The incident was reported to have taken place in Burswell earlier this week.
Officers from Cambridgeshire Police were called to the property after receiving reports of fraud in the area. They said the scammers made up a false story about a police counterfeit bank note investigation.
The fraudsters also sent a taxi to the woman’s house to collect the box of money. They were never seen again and police have launched an investigation.
A Cambridgeshire[2] Police spokesperson said: “Imagine if they concocted a fictitious story about a police counterfeit bank note investigation and instructed her to go to the bank and withdraw £10,000 of her life savings. Imagine if they sent a taxi to her home to collect the box of money – never to be seen again.
“Sounds horrendous, doesn’t it? That’s exactly what happened to an elderly lady from Burwell in Cambridgeshire earlier this week and an investigation is ongoing.”
The force have a dedicated web page for anyone who has concerns or information about courier fraud as well as ways to keep safe. More details can be found by clicking here[3].
