Driver dead and passenger in Royal after car smashes into …

A driver has been killed and his passenger is in a Stoke-on-Trent hospital after his car crashed into a bakery.

The Vauxhall Corsa hit the front windows of Gerrards Bakery, causing significant damage to the shop front in the early hours of this morning (July 17). Two people in the car were taken to Maelor Hospital in Wrexham where the male driver died. The female passenger has since been transferred to the Royal Stoke University Hospital, which is a major trauma unit for the area.

The bakery and a nearby property in Wrexham were badly damaged in the incident and the A525 Ruthin Road was closed for several hours. Fire crews and paramedics were also called to the scene. The Welsh Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances and a duty officer while the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent two appliances from Wrexham along with a technical rescue unit, WalesOnline[1] reports.

North Wales Police is now investigating the fatal collision and Sergeant Steve Richards of the Roads Policing Unit said the force’s ‘thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time’. He added: “Significant damage was caused to the shop front and nearby property and the road was closed for a long time to allow colleagues from the forensic collision investigation team and Wrexham council’s structural engineers to make an initial assessment.”

Police asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or anybody who may have dash cam or CCTV footage, to make contact. Anyone with information can contact the police via its live webchat service[3] or by calling 101 quoting reference number 23000642746.
