Delay hits major roadworks scheme in Nuneaton
Delays have hit roadworks linked to the ongoing project to open up the Bermuda Bridge in Nuneaton[1] to traffic. They have been taking place on and off Heath End Road[2] to widen its junction with Tenlons Road.
This is to pave the way for more traffic through the area once the nearby Bermuda bridge, which runs over the A444, is officially opened. While the junction has been widened, contractors found a ‘number of uncharted utility services’ which had to be protected.
This work is ongoing and, while likely to finish by the end of this month, the planned road resurfacing – from this junction up to The Raywoods – has had to be pushed back. A spokesman for Warwickshire County Council[3], which is behind the huge project, said that this would now take place in the first week of August.
This means there will continue to be roadworks for at least five more weeks. “The Heath End Road widening works are required to enable vehicles to safely turn and access Tenlons Road when approaching the junction from a westerly direction,” the spokesman said.
“There were a number of uncharted utility services found in Tenlons Road needing protection before the carriageway reconstruction works in Tenlons Road could commence which we expect to finish by end of July 2023.
“In addition to the widening works in HeathEnd Road, which also includes the installation of new traffic signals and associated infrastructure,Heath End Road is due to be resurfaced between its junctions with Ashdown Drive and The Ryewoods.
“As these surfacing works are dependent on the progress of the widening works they are currently planned to commence at the start of August for two-weeks.”
Highways bosses previously confirmed works will be completed to allow traffic to use Bermuda Bridge by the end of summer.[5] Shire Hall previously said that bridge will then be opened partially for local residents and businesses to access Bermuda Parkway Railway Station and Coventry[6] Road.
However, there remains no public date for this, nor when the whole project is likely to be finished. What is known is that the project is set to be almost four times the original price.[7]
Details in a county council document that shows that the forecasted cost of the works to open up the bridge in Bermuda to traffic are set to be almost £15m – almost four times the original £3.7m million budget.
