Council launches weekly lottery which will have a top prize of …

A new community lottery is set to be launched in one area of the county, giving residents a chance to win thousands while supporting local good causes. The Oadby and Wigston Borough Council[1] weekly lottery will have its first draw next month with a top prize of £25,000.

Not only will residents have a chance to win big, they will also be helping out groups in their community. Tickets cost just one pound a week, with 60p of each going to good causes in the borough. Players will be able to pick where 50p of that goes.

The top prize can be won by matching all six numbers, with smaller cash pots of up to £2,000 available for matching two to five numbers. The first draw will take place on Saturday, August 5 with weekly draws after that. Local residents[2] will also have a chance to win Love to Shop vouchers of £500 and £250 in the inaugural lottery.

Pride of the Borough, Oadby and Wigston Lions and Elliott Hall for Youth and Community are among the numerous good causes to have already signed up. Other local charities, community groups, voluntary organisations, sports clubs, scout and guides groups, PTAs, schools[4] and similar can sign up at any time.

Councillor Bill Boulter said: “Good causes and community groups in our borough provide an incredibly valuable service to local people and we’re always looking for ways to support them. This includes offering funding and grants as often as possible – such as the financial support given to groups that set up warm hubs in the borough over winter to help those struggling with the cost of living.

“In addition to this though, we want to find new and innovative ways that will allow these good causes to raise further funds directly and this lottery provides that platform. Lotteries like this have proved hugely successful elsewhere in the country and we’re sure local people will get behind it and support their chosen good cause.”

Simon Lucas, Chairman at Pride of the Borough, one of the good causes already signed up, said: “We were pleased to join in and have the opportunity to raise additional funds to support the community work we do in Oadby and Wigston, while also giving supporters the chance of winning a cash prize. It’s also great that early supporters will also get the chance of winning a shopping voucher in the first draw.” Further information, including how to buy tickets and to sign up as a potential beneficiary, can be found here[5]
