Child dies after Land Rover crashes into primary school

A child has died after a car crashed into a school in Wimbledon.

According to our sister site, Mirror Online[1], pupils at the The Study Prep School were having a tea party to mark the end of the school year when a gold and black Land Rover smashed through the gates. A woman in her 40s has been arrested after the incident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The Metropolitan Police were called at 9.54am to reports that a car collided with a building at the primary school. Officers attended, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, local police commander for south west London, said: “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

Earlier today, Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond told PA that several of those hurt are “critically injured.” Shortly before 11am, the Met said at least nine people were reported injured, including two adults and seven children.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, branded the incident as “devastating”. He said: “The incident this morning at a primary school on Camp Road in Wimbledon is absolutely devastating. My heart goes out to everyone affected.

“Police are on the scene and have confirmed the incident is not being treated as terror-related. An investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances and I continue to stay in close contact with the Met and other emergency services.

“Please avoid the area to allow emergency services free access to help all those who need it. If you have any information about the incident please call police on 101.”

Shadow Home Secretary[3] Yvette Cooper tweeted: “Thinking of all the families, pupils and staff affected by the terrible incident at a primary school in Wimbledon this morning.

“Thank you to the emergency services on site for their swift response.”
