Cheshire Olympians Laura and Jason Kenny welcome baby boy

Cheshire's five-time Olympic gold medalist Dame Laura Kenny has welcomed a baby boy. Dame Laura and her husband, seven-time Olympic champion Sir Jason Kenny, welcomed baby Montgomery on Thursday evening (July 20).

Dame Laura announced the birth on Instagram, Saturday, in a post showing Montgomery asleep next to big brother Albie. "Welcome to the world Montgomery George Kenny," she wrote, adding: "Born 20/07/2023 Weighing 9,0lbs at 7.59pm.”

The couple, who live near Knutsford, welcomed their first child in 2017. In November 2021 they suffered a miscarriage, with Laura undergoing lifesaving treatment, the Mirror reports[1].

In January 2022 Dame Laura suffered an ectopic pregnancy. In the January of the following year the couple announced they were expecting Montgomery.

In a candid interview with Mirror Online in December, the cycling icon, 30, opened up on the agony she has experienced through a traumatic year, crediting husband Jason's support through the darkest period in her life.

"We asked Albie what he wanted and he kept saying a little boy. I said to him, ‘What happens if we get a baby sister?’ And he was like, ‘I don’t want it’.

“I’ve never felt so relieved as when we got the result,” she smiles. “We showed him the scan and he said, ‘I hope he grows up quickly.’ He wants the baby to be born aged five!”

Sir Jason won the last of his Olympic golds in Tokyo in the keirin, and currently holds the most medals of any British Olympian. The following January he retired from racing to become coach of the Great Britain men’s sprint team.

Dame Laura is the most successful female British athlete in Olympic history. She was selected as the flag bearer for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony.
