Biker, 22, lucky to be alive after being thrown 30ft in air after crash

A biker thrown 30ft in the air after hitting the back of his truck has thanked the NHS workers who saved his life. Ethan Beeston was riding his Kawaski motorcycle when a pick-up truck in front of him stopped for a pedestrian causing him to hit smash into the back.

Ethan, from Stoke-on-Trent, then veered off onto the other side of the road into oncoming traffic in Hartshill Road, in Stoke[1], and he was thrown 30 foot onto the road. He suffered devastating injuries including a damaged liver, spleen, punctured lungs and internal bleeding which then meant the loss of a kidney. The drivers of the truck and the car were uninjured.

The 22-year-old also broke his ribs, shoulder and collarbone, as well as sustaining a fracture in his spine and a tear in his aorta that needed emergency surgery.

He was initially sedated for two weeks and spent over five weeks being looked after by the Critical Care team at the Royal Stoke University Hospital following the accident on June 6 last year.

Now the team has been handed a CEO award for the care they provided Ethan, who is now back at work and continuing his recovery.

He said: “I would like to thank all of critical care for their care and support and for all that they have done for me and my family. I wouldn’t be where I am now without all of them. I can’t praise everyone enough, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

The Critical Care team at University Hospitals of North Midlands has been awarded a CEO award for the care that was provided to Ethan Beeston

Ethan’s mum Emma said: “We were kept up to date on everything whilst we were there, when we asked questions they provided us with the answers in the best way they could. We were in the waiting room every day of the three weeks for 12 hours a day, it was a tough but the support we were given from the staff was amazing. We knew Ethan was in the right place being cared for by the best people possible.”

Tracy Bullock, chief executive of the University Hospital of the North Midlands, said: “It’s fantastic to meet Ethan and his family and to see how well he is doing since his accident.

“I am pleased to award the team with a well-deserved CEO award in recognition for the care and compassion they provided to Ethan and his family. To hear how the team helped them is brilliant and highlights the level of care they provide every day.”
