Banned driver caught behind wheel after his vehicle was clocked …

A banned driver was caught behind the wheel after his vehicle was clocked speeding on a busy Newcastle road.

Uninsured George Oliver flouted the 30mph limit on the West Road and Two Ball Lonnen, in Fenham[1], when his Ford was recorded as travelling at 36mph. A court[2] heard that the relevant paperwork was sent out to the registered keeper of the vehicle and the 38-year-old admitted to being the driver.

However, further police checks revealed that Oliver was in fact disqualified after he received a 40-month driving ban in 2021. The motor menace, of Dorset Road, in Scotswood[3], is now facing a further ban after he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, speeding and driving with no insurance.

Gurjot Kaur, prosecuting at Newcastle Magistrates' Court[5], said Oliver was travelling in his Ford on the West Road and Two Ball Lonnen on November 5 last year. Miss Kaur added: "As it was speeding, some paperwork was sent out.

"The defendant identified himself as being responsible and there's further checks that show he's disqualified. He was given a 40-month disqualification in 2021 and a 12-month community order."

Andy O'Hanlon, defending, said Oliver was remorseful, offered his apologies and had entered a timely guilty plea. Mr O'Hanlon added: "He has a great deal of difficulties in life with regard to his mental health."

Oliver's case was adjourned until August 9 when he will be sentenced. In the meantime, he was released on unconditional bail.
