Air ambulance lands after serious crash between lorry and combine …
One person was rushed to hospital via air ambulance following a collision on a major road in Monmouthshire[1]. Police held southbound traffic on the A449 between Raglan and Usk for a few hours due to the incident which occurred just before 5pm on Thursday.
Fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene with three fire engines in attendance. Gwent Police confirmed on Friday morning that the they received a report of a road traffic collision on the A449 Raglan towards Usk at around 4.45pm on Thursday, July 20. They also confirmed that the collision involved a lorry and a combine harvester.
The driver of the lorry, a 53-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment, the police force said, but his injuries are not thought to be life changing or life threatening.
The road was blocked off from the A40 Raglan Interchange to the A472 Usk Interchange and reopened just before 9pm. There was heavy congestion in the area. Congestion was compounded by a gas leak which has closed the A4143 to A40 Merthyr Road in both directions.
A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said on Thursday evening: “We have cleared from this incident and it’s now being dealt with by the air ambulance team. A patient has been conveyed from the scene but it is still ongoing. We had a call at 4.47pm and our dealings with the incident ended at 6.30pm.” The spokesman added the incident involved an agricultural vehicle and an HGV.
A spokesman for the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were in attendance at an RTC in the area. We have left the scene. We had three fire engines in attendance and two rescue tenders.” The spokesman added the fire service was called just before 5pm and all rescue vehicles left around 6.30pm.
On Friday, a spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision on the A449 Raglan towards Usk at around 4.45pm on Thursday 20 July. Officers attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service, Welsh Air Ambulance and South Wales Fire and Rescue.
“The collision involved a lorry and a combine harvester. The driver of the lorry, a 53-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life changing or life threatening.”
