2023 Peugeot 208 revealed

On sale October | Price from £21,000 (est)

Cheese, wine and whisky all improve with age. And, arguably, you can now add the current Peugeot 208[1] to that list because, four years after it first went on sale, it’s been given more efficient engines and – in electric form – a longer range between charges.

Indeed, the fully electric Peugeot e-208[2] now has an official range of 248 miles, whereas it was previously capable of only 222 miles. At the same time, power has been hiked from 134bhp to 156bhp. It’s just a pity that the e-208 still can’t match the 281 miles between stops of the MG4[3] EV Long Range.

As for the regular, petrol-powered 208, this is now available with a 1.2-litre mild hybrid[4] engine, which comes in 100bhp and 136bhp guises. Either way, a small electric motor boosts performance and efficiency, although – unlike a regular hybrid – it can’t run purely on electric power, even in traffic or at low speeds.

Alternatively, you can still have a non-hybrid 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, with either 74bhp or 99bhp. This is available with a manual or automatic gearbox[5], whichever output you go for, whereas mild hybrid 208s are automatic only.
