Yorkshire’s most northerly pub on the market in remote ‘lost’ Dale

Yorkshire’s most northerly pub could be yours if you’ve got £500,000 to splurge – and it’s only an hour away from Middlesbrough[1].

The Strathmore Arms in Holwick[2] – the most northerly village in the Historic North Riding of Yorkshire – is for sale but currently under offer. The pub, at the rugged top end of Upper Teesdale, is on sale for approximately £500,000, reports Yorkshire Live[3].

While the building has long been a pub and is set up as such, it is unlikely it will continue as one. The pub’s owners GEO A Carter said The Strathmore Arms was no longer commercially viable because of its remote location and rising running costs endemic in the hospitality sector.

Owners canvassed residents about running the pub, which has been largely closed since March 2020, but concluded there was a ‘lack of scope for a community venture’. In February, Durham County Council granted GEO A Carter planning permission to convert the pub into a private house with an adjoining holiday let.

As it stands, the ground floor comprises a main lounge and bar, a front and rear snug bar, a beer cellar, a catering kitchen, a storeroom and loos. Upstairs there are four en-suite guest bedrooms and a private apartment for the licensee with two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen.

Estate agent GSC Grays has described the property as ‘a public house rich in history and character’.

The listing continues: “The Strathmore Arms is ideally located to take advantage of nearby beauty spots including Low Force, High Force, the Pennine Way and the River Tees.”

While Holwick and the rest of the former Startforth District became part of County Durham under the regional government shake-up of 1974, it remains with the Historic North Riding of Yorkshire. Ten years ago, Yorkshire campaigner Andy Strangeway and the then-North Yorkshire Deputy Lord Lieutenant Peter Scrope unfurled a North Riding of Yorkshire flag outside the Strathmore Arms.
