Welding sparks Leicester industrial unit fire with multiple crews sent …

Welding sparks caused a Leicester industrial unit to catch light[1] today (Wednesday, June 7). Multiple fire crews were dispatched to the scene in the city’s Cannock Street after the fire broke out.

The blaze, which happened in the Hamilton[2] area of Leicester, was first reported at around 12.30pm. Two crews from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s (LFRS) Eastern Fire Station were sent to the scene.

Initial calls had suggested the blaze might affect a number of a gas bottles inside the unit, but crews discovered these were not impacted by the fire. The building’s gas and electric supply was cut off while the response was ongoing.

In a statement, LFRS confirmed that one hose reel jet and two breathing apparatus were used by fire crews to tackle the flames. Crews also checked over the building’s ducting to check for the spread of further flames.

The spokesperson confirmed that the fire was out by 2.30pm and had been restricted to the building’s welding department. Here, they discovered the cause to be “sparks from welding”, with the fire deemed an accident.

The fire service[4] confirmed that an extractor fan in the welding department suffered “severe fire damage”. No injuries were reported, with any remaining smoke being removed through pressure ventilation.
