Sundown Festival 2022: Reveller died after A47 lorry crash

Elvis Mudzengerere died on September 5 last year, from injuries suffered after he was struck in Easton, near the Norfolk Showground.

His death has sparked a number of safety improvements at the annual dance music festival.

The inquest heard that Mr Mudzengerere had travelled to Norfolk from his home in Chelmsford, Essex to attend the festival with two close friends.

It heard the group were enjoying their weekend, but that on the Sunday, Mr Mudzengerere had taken ketamine, which he had acquired from a fellow reveller.

Thomas Maudsley, one of the friends, told the inquest that he had never known his friend to take drugs and that the incident was "very out of character".

But he said that a while after taking the drug Mr Mudzengerere, who was born in Zimbabwe, "changed, stopped speaking and went so quiet".

The following morning, he left the showground on foot and was seen by a number of people walking on the hard shoulder of the A47.

The inquest heard that one lorry driver was forced to make an emergency stop after the 26-year-old "ran into the carriageway waving his arms".

However, a short while later, Mr Mudzengerere was struck by a second lorry and despite attempts to resuscitate him, died at the scene, shortly before 1pm.

A police report read during the hearing said there was nothing the driver could have done to avoid the collision.

Assistant coroner Johanna Thompson concluded his death was as result of a road traffic collision.

Meanwhile, the court heard that a raft of measures would be brought in for future festivals, including extra signs warning revellers against leaving on foot, increased bus services and increased awareness of travel arrangements for revellers.
