‘Serious’ A249 crash sees huge emergency services response

A large emergency service response has been called to the scene of a “serious” crash on the A249 between Sittingbourne[1] and Maidstone[2] on Monday (June 12). The incident forced the A249 Sittingbourne Road to close in both directions as emergency service personnel took to the scene.

It has been confirmed that the crash has involved one vehicle. Officers from Kent Police[3] have attended and manned closures in the area to allow vehicles to turn around while the incident is responded to.

Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS)[4] were also called to the scene, with three fire engines attending the incident. Queuing traffic has persisted in the area as a result, with motorists urged to seek alternative routes where possible.

Currently, an update on any injuries at the scene is yet to be given. The South East Coast Ambulance Service has been approached for further information.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: “Kent Police was called to a one-vehicle collision on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 near Stockbury at 4.25am on Monday, June 12. Emergency services are at the scene and the A249 is currently closed in both directions while the incident is responded to. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes where possible.”

A spokesperson for KFRS said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called at 4.29am Oon Monday (June 12) to assist Kent Police following reports of a crash involving one vehicle on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 near Stockbury. Three fire engines attended.”

The latest update from KCC Highways states: “The A249 remains closed in both directions between the M20 J7 and the M2 J5 (Stockbury Roundabout) due to a serious RTC / investigation works. There will also be no access from Chalky Road and Kent Police have manned closures in place to allow vehicles to turn around. Please use alternate route where possible and expect delays in the surrounding area.”
