Scousers ‘tearful’ after remembering school songs they even had at …

People were "a bit emotional" after being teleported back to their days at primary school.

Recently we remembered those days many of us - particularly those who went to CofE school - spent sitting cross-legged every morning during assembly, singing hymns which many of us could probably still recall from the top of our head.

You had 'Sing Hosanna', 'He's Got the Whole World in His Hands', 'Colours of Day' with its mega chorus - 'so light up the fire and let the flame burn..' - as well as many others. 'Shine Jesus Shine' was another popular one and 'One More Step Along the World I Go' was a classic.

People "loved singing them" and years later have been remembering them with bittersweet nostalgia after our story on the school hymns that stuck with us[1]. Hayley Weiss said she "loved singing them when I think back."

Dave Hughes said: "[I] just moved my mouth and pretended to sing or hid behind someone - still do the same."

Sue Polshaw said: "I recall an Ark song. 'Who built the Ark, Noah Noah' (to which a few of us sung 'noone' instead) My hubby went to a Catholic school and sang really different hymns to me!"

Louise Ellinson said: "Regardless of whether you’re religious or not, singing these songs meant that everyone was used to singing - singing doesn’t happen nearly as much in many schools now."

Samantha Morgan said 'He's Got the Whole World in his Hands' was 'Number One', calling it a 'tune'.

Teresa Bates said: "Our youngest daughter sang “Follow me, follow me” in her last assembly at primary school. We sang it in church last Sunday, was a bit emotional. She’s 33 now."

Jan Abiru said: "Reading this has made me quite tearful. Innocent lovely songs about Jesus."

Laura Lolly Wearing said: "!I fondly remember all of these not just from primary school days but also in my grandparents church at Sunday School."

Clare Johannessen said: "I had Colours Of Day sung at my wedding 37 years ago. I sometimes find myself humming too it even now."
