Ride your bike on the ring road at family cycling event in Coventry
Get on your bike this weekend for a family cycling event – and have a chance to ride on the ring road. Don’t worry, it will be a closed-off bit, but CycleFest is part of the MotoFest 2023 Festival Weekend on Saturday, June 3.
The free event will have a range of cycling activities on offer as well as the opportunity to ride a closed section of the ring road in the early evening. The 3.7km MotoFest Sprint Circuit on the Coventry[1] Ring Road will be open for cycling from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Bring your own bike or hire one at the event, including adults and children’s bikes, cargo bikes and inclusive bikes and trikes for all ages.
Throughout the day and into the evening there will also be a Cycling Expo near the Railway Station with free activities on offer:
- Watch the Extreme Mountain Bike Show
- Try the Pedal Power Arcade with Scalextric, smoothie and bubble bikes
- Give the Go Ride Skills course a go and explore the Learn to Ride area
- Get ready to ride with a free check from Dr Bike
Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said, “It’s fantastic that once again Coventry is hosting such a great event that’s inclusive for all families, and offers the opportunity for people to get out and enjoy cycling especially as the weather gets warmer and we approach the summer.
“We are so pleased to see Cyclefest at MotoFest return for another year and turn our enthusiasm towards this form of active travel.”
There will also be British Cycling guided rides starting in Binley[2] and Coundon[3], going along the new segregated cycleways to join the main CycleFest ride in the evening. You can book your place online[4].
Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, said, “The opportunity to cycle on Coventry Ring Road is always popular so I’m pleased we can make it happen as part of this year’s Cyclefest. I’ll be joining the ride on my bike!
“We are working to provide fully segregated cycleways in the city so people can make shorter or more local journeys by bike – this is good for physical and mental health and also for the environment. The routes include accessible crossings for all, making them perfect for wheeling and walking and with the warmer weather I hope to see lots of people enjoying them.
“There will be something for everyone at Cyclefest and the day will be topped off with the chance to ride the Ring Road.”
James Noble, MotoFest Coventry Festival Director, said: “Our partnership with Coventry City Council[5] will see CycleFest at MotoFest taking place at the main festival for the first time. This family-friendly event is a fantastic opportunity to ride a section of the closed Ring Road on one of the most sustainable forms of transport available.
“With the cycle industry laying the foundations for the success of Coventry’s car and motorbike industry, it’s also an opportunity to celebrate the earliest example of the city’s transport heritage.
“When you add in the regular music stages, family activities and new innovations such as our food village supported by Digbeth Dining Club, we are delighted to offer a true entertainment extravaganza for this year’s festival with something for everyone.”
