Plymouth Magistrates’ Court list: Train fare dodgers, overloaded …
The courts are rarely quiet and although this latest list does not show any drink or drug drivers - which is unusual - other miscreants, cheaters, speedsters and unfortunates have had to pay the price for their law-breaking.
The slew of rail fare dodgers - we only print those who are from Plymouth, but many, many others appear at Plymouth Magistrates Court from other locations around the entire country - highlights how expensive even skipping a minor fare can be. One such person saw them trying to save just £1.70 and ended up nearly £500 out of pocket as a result.
On the other hand, one person was arrested and charged for using threatening behaviour to another in a public street and then causing £75 damage to a police van when he was arrested. His sentence was effectively his time served in custody at the police station and in the court cells waiting to be dealt with.
Meanwhile, another man committed seven counts of failing to comply with noise abatement notices. In addition to a fine and court costs he had "items" to the value of £1,221 "forfeited", which could mean whatever sound system he employed to make the noise is now in a better place - presumably out of earshot of his neighbours.
