Plymouth Magistrates’ Court list: Bible thief and a man who …

A week is a long time in politics and it must seem similar on the bench of a magistrates’ court. The cavalcade of ne’er-do-wells, unfortunates, unlucky and obviously dodgy have appeared before the district judges and lay magistrates, highlighting the range of offences the law decrees and the range of sentences the law allows.

From those who feel that drinking alcohol or snorting and smoking illicit substances before getting behind the steering wheel of a car is entirely fine to those who have – regardless of any coaxing or cajoling – have failed to ensure their child attends school, the law allows for magistrates to impose a variety of sanctions, from fines and orders to carry out unpaid work, to suspended sentences and even jail.

One man was jailed after he failed to comply with a supervision requirement on his release from prison. One may argue that there was an element of divine justice, in that the original offence for which he was jailed covered a number of matters – including stealing a Bible.

Another man felt that the best way to win his lady love was to repeatedly harass her, turn up at her doorstep, attend locations she would frequent and completely ignore warnings by her, her family and her friends to leave her alone. Along with a restraining order for three years he was handed an “exclusion requirement” with an electronic tag to ensure he did not enter a defined area for 12 weeks.
