Plans to name Nuneaton road after King Charles III rejected
The Royal Names Team has rejected Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council plans to name a road in Nuneaton[1] after King Charles III. The borough council has confirmed that its application to the Royal Names Department of the Cabinet Office to rename part of Coton Road, predominantly the stretch outside the Town Hall, as King Charles Road[2] has been turned down.
Councillor Sam Croft, cabinet for finance, explained that the Town Hall had known for some time, but denied that they kept it a 'secret', explaining that they planned to announce a new name with some new planned civic honours. They have now said that they plan to name the section of road Coronation Road.
In a statement, Cllr Croft said: "While the Royal Names Department of the Cabinet Office (whose permission we sought in order to use a protected title) was not able to approve our first preference to use the name "King Charles Road", they have made it clear that they had no objection to renaming the road to mark the coronation itself.
"I can therefore confirm that we will proceed with the process of renaming the portion of Coton Road outside of the Town Hall as "Coronation Road" as a permanent memorial of the coronation year. We will shortly be bringing this to the council's Civic Honours Committee, along with some further proposals to honour those residents of our borough who have achieved great things and served their community, as a fitting way to mark this historic year.
"Naturally, we would have liked to have confirmed this before the celebrations themselves, but the length of the process has made this impossible. We have therefore decided to make the change at the same time as proposing these additional civic honours, which will still take place within 2023.
"These further nominations will be announced in due course."
