Norwich folk’s fury at Hellesdon Road lorry crashes

People living in Hellesdon Road in Hellesdon say they are being terrorised by juggernauts rattling through the street despite a weight restriction technically banning them from it.

Numerous reports of trucks knocking over fences and damaging homes have been made with the latest incident seeing a metal fence on a pavement being shunted from its foundations just two weeks ago at the road’s junction with Hellesdon Hall Road.

Large vehicles flouting the rules of the road have also caused large tailbacks around the city suburb as they attempt to manoeuvre back from roads they cannot fit through.

Stuart Ricketts, who lives directly opposite the junction, says the fence is knocked down four times a year.

He said: “The bridge to get on the road is a three-ton limit and we’re getting 44-ton vehicles smashing through the streets.

“It’s ridiculous, someone is going to get hit at some point, the last time it happened my neighbour went past minutes before.

“Kids use it for school, something needs to be done before someone gets killed, where’s the enforcement.”

Labour Norfolk county councillor for Wensum, Maxine Webb, echoed Mr Ricketts thoughts saying something needed to be done by the council before someone is killed on the road.

She said: “It happens regularly at the crossroads with the metal fence which is there to stop people crossing is taken out.

“Last summer it was replaced and on the first night the new one was smashed. After the most recent incident they just drove off and left it there.

“There is a sign telling them they can’t use it at the top of the road near the Marlpit but they either don’t see it because it’s overgrown or they ignore it.

“It’s a really awkward junction, HGVs shouldn’t use it.

“We need more signage and a reduced speed limit but we also need cameras and a crossing put in between Hellesdon Road and Hellesdon Hall Road.”
