  • High-tech interior features 12.9-inch touchscreen and all-new centre console layout

The new Skoda Kodiaq[1] has been showcased for the first time ahead of its full reveal in the autumn. The new Skoda Kodiaq is the second generation of the firm’s range-topping large SUV[2], replacing the popular original first revealed in 2016 – and named HonestJohn Car of the Year 2018[3].

The new Skoda Kodiaq continues to offer seven-seat practicality with the Czech firm promising even more interior space. It has an updated range of engines too, including the first plug-in hybrid new Skoda Kodiaq.

The new Skoda Kodiaq will debut a new interior concept, combining both digital and manual controls, and will be designed around a comprehensive central 12.9-inch touchscreen. New Skoda Simply Clever features are promised too.

The new Skoda Kodiaq will provide a stern challenge to seven-seat rivals including the Nissan X-Trail[4], SEAT Tarraco[5], Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace[6] and Peugeot 5008[7]. The Kia Sorento[8] and Hyundai Santa Fe[9] are competitive challengers, as are the premium Land Rover Discovery Sport[10] and Mercedes-Benz GLB[11].

New 2024 Skoda Kodiaq prices and release date

The new Skoda Kodiaq will be revealed in full this autumn. It is expected to go on sale later this year, with the first UK deliveries beginning in spring 2024.

The new Skoda Kodiaq should be priced in line with today’s model, which means the range is likely to start from around £35,000. The new plug-in hybrid version is likely to cost upwards of £45,000.

New 2024 Skoda Kodiaq styling, interior and technology

The new Skoda Kodiaq is being showcased in camouflaged guise, complete with a distinctive, spy camera-fooling wrap. Some elements of the new design can still be picked out, including a bold grille at the front and chunky wheelarches that wrap around alloy wheels sized from 17-20 inches.

The new Skoda Kodiaq will have smoother, cleaner body features than today’s car, giving it a modern appearance in line with other recent models such as the Skoda Enyaq iV[12]. The side windows extend deep into the rear, ensuring third-row passengers still have a good view out.

The new Skoda Kodiaq “keeps the distinctive elements of our SUV design language,’ says tech boss Johannes Neft, but “we have further sharpened the look”. Highlights will include new Crystalline headlights featuring a coloured element called Crystallinium.

The new Skoda Kodiaq is 4758mm long, which is 61mm longer than today’s model, and measures 1864mm wide and 1657mm tall.

The new Skoda Kodiaq has an all-new interior design concept, which has not yet been revealed. The gearshift lever has been relocated from the centre console onto the steering column – a Skoda first, and similar to the Volkswagen ID.4[13] – and it has a bold central touchscreen measuring 12.9 inches. The new Skoda Kodiaq incorporates a “clever combination” of manual and digital controls, says the firm.

The new Skoda Kodiaq offers a 10.25-inch ‘virtual cockpit’ driver’s display instead of traditional analogue dials, and this can be complemented by a head-up display. The new Skoda Kodiaq also incorporates a clever display cleaner to combat fingerprints, while a dual Phone Box in the front offers cooling and charging for two mobile phones at the same time.

A full seven-seater, the new Skoda Kodiaq has an improved 920mm of third row seat headroom, which is up 15mm on today’s car. The boot is also vast: it measures a whopping 910 litres for the five-seat version (75 litres more than today’s car), and between 340 litres and 845 litres for the seven-seat new Skoda Kodiaq. The third row seats fold flat into the floor. There is a new flexible element in the boot, which helps keep things tidy.

The new Skoda Kodiaq has sliding second-row seats, and the centre tunnel now includes a cup holder for rear seat passengers. Door edge protectors help keep car park scrapes at bay for the new Skoda Kodiaq.

New 2024 Skoda Kodiaq engines, performance and fuel economy

The new Skoda Kodiaq will be available with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. All come with a DSG automatic transmission as standard – there will not be a new Skoda Kodiaq with a manual gearbox. There are no current plans for a fully electric Skoda Kodiaq, either.

The new Skoda Kodiaq petrol range offers a choice of two engines. The 150ps 1.5-litre TSI has mHEV mild hybrid technology, for the first time in a Skoda Kodiaq. It has active cylinder technology (ACT+) that shuts down two cylinders during light loads, to improve fuel economy. It uses a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

The new Skoda Kodiaq 1.5-litre TSI mild hybrid uses the fuel-efficient Miller cycle. It has a variable turbine geometry turbo, too.

The new Skoda Kodiaq is also available with a 204ps 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine, a detuned version of the Volkswagen Golf GTI[14] engine. This has 4x4 all-wheel drive as standard. New Skoda Kodiaq performance figures will be revealed later.

The new Skoda Kodiaq is also available with a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. The entry-level engine has 150ps, and there is a 193ps version which also comes with 4x4 four-wheel drive as standard. Both have a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

The new Skoda Kodiaq iV plug-in hybrid uses the 150ps 1.5-litre TSI engine combined with an electric motor for a system power output of 204ps. It is front-wheel drive and has a six-speed DSG gearbox. It has a large 25.7kWh battery for an impressive all-electric range of more than 62 miles. It can also use 50kW DC rapid chargers.

The new Skoda Kodiaq uses an updated version of the Volkswagen Group MQB platform that’s used by the current Skoda Kodiaq. The updated MQB evo platform is also used by the upcoming new 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan[15].

What's the best seven seater for towing a caravan?

I need a large family car with seven seats and a towing capacity of 1,850kg. My existing Skoda Kodiaq is used for towing my caravan and driving on family holidays (with my three children and friends/relatives). The new seven-seat SUV diesel options are rather limited these days and I'm assuming I'll need another Kodiaq but I feel they’re a bit dated now, perhaps there could be another option in a similar price range?

Another Kodiaq probably is your best choice - the seven-seat diesel SUV market is rapidly shrinking! You could try a Kia Sorento as an alternative. It's not as affordable as a Kodiaq but it is well-equipped for the money and offers plenty of space. It also makes for an excellent tow car. You could also consider a Toyota Highlander - it's a large plug-in hybrid SUV capable of towing up to 2,000kg.
