Motorway closed as lorry bursts into flames after crash

There were heavy delays on the M6 today, due to a lorry catching fire.[1]

Emergency services were called to reports of a crash[2], involving two vehicles, at around 7.49am this morning on Monday, June 19. The incident happened on the M6 Northbound, from J19 A556 (Knutsford ) to J20 M56 J9 ( Lymm Interchange).

At the scene, firefighters from Cheshire fire and rescue service found that a lorry had caught fire after the crash. All traffic was stopped, northbound and southbound, while fire crews from Lymm and Warrington extinguished the blaze.[3]

The southbound carriageway was re-opened a short time later, but traffic remained in the area while drivers slowed down to look at the scene. At one point, there were delays of around 90 minutes[5], with traffic stretching back to J22 Newton Le Willows.

A spokesperson for Cheshire fire and rescue service: “A road traffic collision involving two vehicles on the M6 northbound was attended to by firefighters. One of the vehicles was well alight and a hose reel jet was used to put the fire out.

“Part of the motorway was closed off while the incident was dealt with. Everyone was out of the vehicles and police and ambulance were also in attendance.”
