Moment tractor-trailer stuck on a railroad crossing is smashed to pieces by oncoming train in North Carolina - the third crash in the same spot this year

  • The smash happened on S. Main Street in Wingate, North Carolina

This is the terrifying moment a tractor-trailer was struck and smashed to pieces after it was hit by an oncoming train, making it the third crash in the same spot this year.

The truck's trailer had been lodged on the railroad crossing in Wingate, North Carolina[2], yesterday when the smash happened, causing the train to derail.

Thankfully no one was hurt during the crash that happened on S. Main Street and officials said no hazardous material was being carried to the tractor-trailer.

A local news report from WSOC-TV said the truck driver had been taken to a police station, after drugs were found in a compartment.

Police said it did not know if the drugs had anything to do with why the truck had been stuck on the track.

In the video, the train can be seen travelling at high speeds, blaring its horn before colliding with the truck, causing dust to be sprayed everywhere.

The truck is sheared in half as a loud boom is heard.

This is not the first time a train has slammed into a stuck truck at the crossing.

In January of this year, two semi-trucks got hit by an oncoming train within a single week.

The reason for this type of vehicle getting stuck is the grade on the tracks being too high.

The most recent crash is believed to be the third that's happened so far this year.

Local authorities have proposed a plan to fix the issue in an effort to prevent train crashes.

One witness Malik Jordan, who is a student at Wingate University, had been getting a pizza when he saw the accident last night.

He told the channel: 'The second I came out, I look to my right and saw there was a truck on the tracks. I was amazed. I was like 'Oh goodness, I can't believe this is happening again.''

Footage of the crash posted on social media was captioned: 'Another Train hitting a truck in Wingate. This is eventually going to cause a derailment. Something needs to be done now.'

Locals are said to be fed up with the accidents. Brad Lacroix, who is a delivery driver in the area, said: 'The whole town is just kind of rolling their eyes at it at this point.'

A spokesperson for the Union County Sheriff's Department said: 'Just after five o'clock this afternoon, a locomotive collided with a commercial motor vehicle (semi-truck) that was stuck on the railroad tracks on North Main Street in Wingate.

'The truck was not carrying any hazardous materials and the driver was able to exit the truck prior to the collision.

'Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at this time.'
