Milestone for Bermuda Bridge work as safety barriers being installed

Work has started to take place on Bermuda bridge in preparation for it to be able to take the weight of traffic for the first time. The latest update states that works to install a Vehicle Restraint System (VRS)/safety barrier on the northside of the eastern embankment have started.

Excavations have been undertaken for the VRS foundations and, once this is completed, the new VRS will be connected to the Bermuda Bridge[1] parapets. Once this is finished, work to install new deck waterproofing and bridge joints be able to take place.

Then the actual new roads over the bridge will be completed ahead of vehicles being allowed to use it for the first time. But while there is progress on the actual bridge, which has now seen all of the scaffolding removed, the wider works continue.

Highways bosses previously confirmed works will be completed to allow traffic to use Bermuda Bridge by the end of summer.[2] Warwickshire County Council[3] has said that bridge will then be opened partially for local residents and businesses to access Bermuda Parkway Railway Station and Coventry[4] Road.

But the wider works are set to continue into the Autumn.

Heath End Road works

Away from the bridge, among the biggest ongoing works are those taking place on and off Heath End Road.[5] A huge amount of the road at its junction with Tenlons Road has been removed. This is so that this part of the road can be widened.

Temporary four-way traffic lights are in place and these are set to remain until all of the works, including re-surfacing along Heath End Road between Ashdown Drive and The Raywoods, are finished next month.

An official end date for the bridge works still has yet to be revealed. It is not secret that it has been hugely delayed and massively over budget but the public will not find out the true costs until after it has finished.[6]
