Cops, firefighters and a Network Rail incident van all attended the scene.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that overhead sparks had caused an ongoing incident at the station.

The Met Police had cordons in place as a precaution while London Fire Brigade crews examined the railway line.

Network Rail said: "Our team of engineers are currently investigating a potential cable fault in the Borough High Street area.

"The road under the railway bridge is currently closed while these examination works are taking place and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

"Train services to and from London Bridge station are currently running as normal.

"Rail passengers can check their journey in advance by visiting National Rail Enquiries."

Southeastern Rail said: "Response staff have found a small lineside fire that can be put out using a fire extinguisher.

"The staff have blocked one line in and out of Cannon Street so trains may be delayed by 5-10 minutes between London Bridge & Cannon Street while they put out the fire."

Eyewitness Sarah Cole said: "Much drama at London Bridge station as emergency services close off the road under the main railway bridge due to reports of 'fire and sparks' coming from the bridge and an explosion sound.

"I'm pretty sure it's just sparks from a tight turn and wet rails over a loud bridge.

"Never seen so many emergency vehicles appear so quickly.

"Tourists seemed very alarmed but locals totally unconcerned.

"Anyway, if that bridge is closed to trains it's going to really mess up a whole lot of train journeys, so good luck folks."

A local trader said: "I was close by close by where it happened. It was quite loud and sparks reached the pavement."
