M56 reopens following emergency repairs after collision involving …

UPDATED: THE M56 near Warrington has now reopened following emergency repairs after yesterday’s collision involving a HGV and a car which brought traffic chaos to the town.

The motorway had been closed in both directions with the westbound carriageway remaining closed throughout the night for emergency repairs after the road surface had been damanged by fire.

The incident which involved both vehicles catching fire, led to heavy traffic in and around Stockton Heath and on Chester Road and Knutsford Road and Lumb brook as traffic was diverted off the motorway.A Cheshire Police spokesperson said yesterday:”At around 3pm today (Thursday 29 June), police were called to reports of a collision on M56 between junction 9 and junction 10 between Stretton and Lymm.“Officers in attendance found that the collision involved a HGV and car.“The driver of the HGV, a man, is believed to have sustained a serious injury to his ankle and is being treated by paramedics.“The driver of the car, a woman, is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for further checks.“The road is currently closed in both direction and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

Three fire crews attended at the scene only leaving at 7.15pm after a fire involving the HGV and car had been fully extinguished.Resurfacing works took place overnight following damage sustained to the road surface and the central reservation barriers.

The #M56[1] in #Cheshire[2] is CLOSED westbound between J9 (#M6[3]) and J10 (#Stretton[4]) due to a collision involving a car and an overturned lorry.

All emergency services are attending the scene.

Emergency resurfacing and barrier repairs are now complete and the #M56[5] in #Cheshire[6] has re-opened westbound between J9 (#M6[7]) & J10 (#Stretton[8]).
