M20 lorry fire closes motorway near Maidstone as smoke wafts …
A lorry fire on the M20[1] brought traffic to a standstill near Maidstone[2] on Tuesday afternoon (June 6). The blaze took hold of the vehicle’s trailer on the eastbound carriageway between junctions five (Aylesford) and six (Maidstone / Blue Bell Hill).
Traffic was temporarily held in the area while the incident was resolved, with congestion subsequently stretching back to junction four. Smoke from the fire was reportedly blowing across both sides of the carriageway.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) confirmed that there were three fire engines in attendance working to bring the blaze under control. Crews were wearing breathing apparatus and using compressed air foam to extinguish the flames.
KFRS also confirmed that no injuries were reported. The carriageway remained closed while crews continued to tackle the fire, and traffic cleared after the road reopened shortly before 7pm.
