M2 crash sparks witness appeal after road closed for seven hours

Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash on the M2 which saw the road closed for seven hours and left a motorcyclist ‘seriously injured’. The collision happened just before 11am on Saturday (June 10) on the coastbound carriageway close to junction 5.

It involved a black Kawasaki motorbike and a silver Ford Mondeo Estate. Police and ambulance crews attended and the rider of the motorcycle, a man in his 50s, was airlifted to a London hospital.

As KentLive reported[1], the coastbound road was closed after the crash and did not reopen until around 7pm. As temperatures hit 29C in the area at 1pm and remained sweltering for the rest of the day, drivers tried to find other routes to keep moving.

There was congestion to the A249 northbound back to Maidstone, as well as the M20 eastbound between junction 6 and junction 8 as drivers looked to avoid closure. Crash scene investigators worked at the scene to gather evidence.

Officers from the serious collision investigation unit continue to work on establishing the full circumstances of the incident. Today, they are urging witnesses, including those who saw the motorbike or car in the moments leading up to the collision, to contact them.

Drivers are also asked to check dashcams for any footage which may assist the investigation. Anyone with information should call the serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538 quoting RY/DC/061/23. You can also email [email protected].[3][4]

Dashcam footage can be uploaded to a page specifically for this incident via Kent Police’s online portal here[5].
