Lost Cambs train station that last saw regular trains more than 90 …
Like most counties in Britain, Cambridgeshire is not short of lost railway stations. Far fewer towns and villages have train services than a century ago.
A great many of those disused stations saw their passenger services finish in the 1960s. This was due to sweeping cuts across the railway network following the now infamous Beeching Report.
However a number of Cambridgeshire railway stations had already lost their services well before then. And Stretham station was one of them.
The station opened in 1866 on the line between Ely and St Ives.[2] The line would become known as the Ely[3] and St Ives Railway in 1878.
Three trains a day ran each way on the line – with an additional service on Monday and Thursday. Other stations on the route included Wilburton, Sutton and Bluntisham.
However the line was hit hard by the rise of road transport and was not particularly profitable. Most booking offices at stations on the line were closed and in 1927 there were only seven or eight passengers on any given train.
The writing was pretty much on the wall for the railway line at that point – and Stretham station as well. The station saw its last regular passenger service on February 2 1931.
The line itself is now long gone. However the station building still stands as a private property.
