Letter: Bath driver hits out at pedestrians with earphones stepping …
A Bath driver has hit out at pedestrians with earphones stepping into the road. The motorist says she has recently been involved in two close shaves in the city.
Julie Little says she has experienced people on footpaths in the city stepping out onto the road, despite being near to a designated crossing. She says that both times this happened the pedestrian was “plugged into their phones”.
She also revealed that she received “a mouthful of abuse from one gent”. Julie Little made her feelings known in a letter to local newspaper Bath Chronicle .
She wrote: “I am aware that the Highway Code has recently changed to give pedestrians, and it seems everyone else, priority over cars. However, it also states: ‘Where there is a crossing nearby, use it’.
“I thought this would be common sense – but no. Twice in the last couple of weeks I have driven into Bath.
“At the junction into Morrisons I indicated, checked mirrors for any bikes alongside and turned left at the green traffic lights. On both occasions someone stepped straight off the kerb in front of me despite there being a pedestrian crossing within a few feet.
“Not only did they not look but because they were plugged into their phones, they couldn’t hear either. The mouthful of abuse from one gent was then unbelievable!
“People state drivers can be thoughtless, inconsiderate and dangerous. It appears this isn’t just true of those in cars!”
