Kearsley: Diversions as Stoneclough Road repairs take place

Network Rail announced in May that Stoneclough Road in Kearsley will be closed for up to ten weeks from July, with a survey already being carried out in preparation.

Now Cllr Debbie Newall, who represents the area on the council, has announced that she and her colleague Cllr Melanie Livesey have found out more about which alternative routes will be used.

She said: “Melanie and me met with Highways officers on Hulme Road today.

“The good news is that the road is being repaired from just before the bridge, up Slackey Brow.

“The machine that is used for the type of repair done under the bridge was too big to fit in the tunnel so another had to be brought in called the ‘multi hog’ and staff trained to use it.

“It is expected that this work will be completed around the end of June, but we don’t have confirmed dates yet.

“When we do, we’ll update.”

She added: “Hulme Road is not going to be the diversion route, that will be down the main road via Little Lever and Whitefield, depending on direction of travel.

“Signage will be placed at both ends of the road to say ‘low bridge’ and ‘no commercial vehicles’ it is hoped that this will deter non local traffic.

“There will be no traffic lights on the junction of Slackey Brow and Manchester Road, highways will not consider a four way junction there.”

Cllr Newall says that she and her colleagues will continue to liaise with Network Rail and with Transport for Greater Manchester while works[1] are carried out.

She hopes to have a fully updated bus schedule[5] with final details of the shuttle service the week after next.

Cllr Newall said: We can ask, and we do, but we cannot compel them to provide a particular type of service.

“Waste collection will continue as usual, they will just use another route to get here any changes to service will be circulated to residents.

“Emergency services will make their own arrangements regarding attending incidents during the closure, this is a matter for their operations departments.”
