Greggs lorry that overturned in Bognor Regis removed

Firefighters from West Sussex[1] Fire and Rescue Service, gas engineers and staff from Network Rail have been working in Longford Road in Bognor since early this morning to right the vehicle after it left the road, went through a fence and overturned.

A gas mains and telegraph pole were damaged during the collision and trains were cancelled[2] due to the lorry blocking access to a signal box.

People living nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors closed and some residents were evacuated.

No one was injured during the incident, Network Rail said.

Engineers had to make the gas main safe and the “precariously leaning” telegraph pole had to be removed before the lorry could be righted and moved.

The lorry was finally able to be turned back over at around 3pm.

Network Rail said it is in the process of reopening the railway.

“Lorry safely removed and we’re in the process of opening up the railway. Please keep checking with

Southern Rail for the latest travel updates,” a Network Rail spokesman said.

“Thank you for your patience on this very hot day.”

A spokesman from Southern Rail said the railway should reopen from 7pm.

A Southern Rail spokesman said: “The lorry is now upright and has been moved away and the next step is to have the site and equipment checked for any damage.

“We are expecting the line to reopen from 7pm, and we'll provide further updates as we get them.”

The road remains closed.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The vehicle is now upright and we expect the road to reopen fully within the next hour.

“Those evacuated have returned home and local residents can now open windows and doors. Thank you to all businesses and residents for their patience and support during this incident.”
