Greggs lorry overturns and crashes beside railway: Fire service warns residents to keep windows and doors closed as ‘gas main is damaged’

  • The Greggs lorry crashed into a signal box on Longford Road in Bognor Regis
  • Emergency crews worked to fix a leak after warning a gas main is damaged

Emergency services have closed a road in Bognor Regis after a gas main was damaged by a crash involving an overturned Greggs lorry.

The sausage roll seller’s vehicle fell on its side after crashing into a signal box next to a railway line on Longford Road in the West Sussex seaside resort.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services have now closed the road and asked local residents to shut their doors and windows following fears of a gas leak.

The fire brigade warned the road will remain closed for ‘several hours’ as they noted there will be no trains running from Bognor Regis station.

A telephone line was also damaged in the collision that saw the Greggs lorry crash through a fence that separates the road from the railway.

The fire brigade said emergency crews are now working to fix a gas leak before moving the overturned vehicle.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue said emergency crews were working with gas engineers to ‘isolate’ the leaked gas.

They also called on those who live near Longford Road to stay in their homes and warned people nearby to stay away from the immediate area.

Photos and video footage shows the lorry on its side next to the railway as emergency crews work to fix the problem.

The pictures show the lorry having knocked down a section of the fence along Longford Road that separates it from the railway line.

Southern Railway said in a statement that ‘a road vehicle blocking the railway between Barnham and Bognor Regis means trains are unable to run’.

The pictures also show the lorry, which has a picture of a bacon sandwich on its side, had hit a telephone mast.
