Firefighters called to Eye landfill fire that spread across ‘large area …
Firefighters spent the night tackling a fire at a landfill. Fire crews were called to the incident on Eyebury Road, Eye, at around 6pm on Saturday (June 3).
Around 20,000 square metres of landfill were ‘well alight’. Firefighters remained at the scene overnight to ensure it was safe – with the blaze reported to have been started accidentally.
A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service[1] spokesperson said: “At 6.04pm on Saturday (3) crews were called to a fire on Eyebury Road in Eye, Peterborough. Crews from Dogsthorpe, Stanground, Thorney and March, along with the water carrier from Ramsey, the high-volume pump from Cambourne, and a crew from Market Deeping in Lincolnshire, attended the incident.
“Firefighters arrived to find a large area of landfill, measuring around 20,000 square metres, well alight. They extinguished the fire using hose reels and jets, maintaining a presence throughout the night to ensure the area was safe and checking for hot spots. The cause of the fire was accidental.”
