Delays expected as two Leicestershire bridges to be demolished

Network Rail has confirmed the plans to demolish two bridges crossing railway lines in a Leicestershire village could cause delays for motorists. The Newton Harcourt-based bridges in Fleckney Road and Wistow Road are being demolished to allow Network Rail[1] to electrify the route between Kettering and Wigston[2].

The changes are a part of the Midland Main Line upgrades which are set to create a cleaner, electrified railway line for passengers in the region. Wistow Road has been closed since May to allow work on the bridge, and from Monday, June 26, there are three-way traffic lights in operation in Glen Road to allow work to begin in Fleckney Road.

The traffic lights will remain in place until July 14 as motorists[3] are being advised to leave more time for their journeys. Fleckney Road will fully close to motorists on Monday, July 31, with a signposted diversion route being put in place.

The road closures are expected to remain in place until February 2024. The measures have been put in place in collaboration with Leicestershire County Council[5] in an attempted to minimise disruption.

Jenny Blake, Senior Sponsor at Network Rail, said: “The work we’re doing to raise these bridges is crucial and will help us move forward on the Midland Main Line Upgrade.

“We’re doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum, and we’d urge drivers to leave extra time for their journey whilst these traffic lights are in place. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this time.”
