Croydon tram crash driver not guilty over seven deaths
The driver in the Croydon tram disaster that killed seven passengers has been cleared of wrongdoing.
Alfred Dorris, 49, appeared visibly shaken when a jury at the Old Bailey acquitted him of failing to take “reasonable care” of the health and safety of himself and 69 passengers on Tram 2551 in November 2016.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours on Monday and came to a unanimous verdict at the end of a prosecution brought by the Office of Road and Rail.
Transport for London and Tram Operations Limited have previously admitted health and safety offences ahead of the derailment and will be sentenced later.
The court had heard Dorris, of Beckenham, south London, was going three times faster than he should have been
