Burst water pipe ruptures busy road in Leicester

A busy road through Highfields, Leicester, is closed after a water pipe burst under the carriageway. St Peter’s Road is shut in both directions after water began flooding the street on Thursday, June 1.

The closure of the usually busy route through the city forced bus services to temporarily reroute and sent traffic through narrow side streets. Residents also faced problems with their water supply.

Engineers from Severn Trent were called to carry out emergency repairs to the pipe. A spokesperson confirmed the pipe has now been fixed and any residents’ water pressure should have returned to normal.

But the pressure of the pipe burst also led to a rupture in the tarmac, which means the road remains closed while further repairs are underway. The road remains closed between Laurel Road and East Park Road.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “As a result of a burst water pipe on St Peter’s Road, we’d like to apologise to any customers who may have experienced lower-than-usual water pressure.

“Our teams have now completed fixing the pipe, and everyone’s water pressure should have returned to normal. We’ll now be working to repair the road surface and getting the road reopened as quickly and safely as possible.”

It has not been confirmed when the road will reopened, however, traffic monitoring website Inrix, says the work is expected to be complete by the end of Monday, June 5.
