Bumpy and potholed major roads in Winterton to close for …
A number of major roads in Winterton that are riddled with potholes and uneven surfaces will see a series of closures this summer while repair works take place.
Four roads – Winteringham Road, North Street, West Street and Northlands Road South – will be resurfaced from late July to August. While full road closures will be in place, work will take place in phases to minimise disruption.
The exact works schedule is not confirmed, but it will be done during the school holidays. The mini roundabout at the junction of Earlsgate, Northlands Road South and High Street, will also be resurfaced.
North Lincolnshire Council[2] leader Cllr Rob Waltham said: “We are keeping our promise and will crack on with the investment in improving the road network across North Lincolnshire – including getting on top of winter potholes.
“We recently completed works through many areas in Scunthorpe[3], Ashby and Bottesford as well as Burringham and Barton – now we are moving on to Winterton.” Scunthorpe Live understands that Conservative literature in Winterton during the local elections period included a promise of road repairs in the summer.
Some works already took place in late May as evidenced by battered temporary signage at, for example, the junction between King Street and the B1207.
Residents affected by the temporary closures will be contacted and access to homes and businesses will be maintained.
Cllr Neil Poole, cabinet member for highways operations, said: “It’s great to be able to confirm these works will take place, investing further in Winterton and backing the communities there.
“It is a never-ending task managing and maintaining the road network but with new technology we are able to deliver these schemes quicker than before and they last longer.”

When they begin, Winteringham Road works will take place Monday to Friday between 7pm and 6am, while North Street, West Street and Northlands Road works are to be carried out Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm, and the mini-roundabout will be completed between 7pm and 11pm.
Scunthorpe-based Britcon has been awarded the contract. Other previous works for the council include a £1m contract for the creation of the urban park at Church Square, Scunthorpe, and £135,000 for resurfacing of roads in Epworth.
They are also the company currently carrying out just under £120,000 of works to resurface the carriageway of Butts Road, in Barton-upon-Humber. This is set to be over by June 18.
Potholes featured as a campaign topic during recent North Lincolnshire local elections with a political row over repair funding. Last year, the council got a high-tech pothole busting machine[4] and asked for suggestions for what it should be called.
These varied from Holey Moley, to Harry Pothole, to Potty McPotface, to Phil McCavity. The council eventually chose “Phil”.
Despite Phil’s existence, North Lincolnshire Council also paid out £50,000 for two pothole filling gangs for eight weeks in spring. In 2022, the council had 8,250 pothole reports and repaired 7,930[5].
