Elderly man dies after Birmingham New Road collision involving …

An elderly man has died after being hit by a lorry on a major A-road. The collision took place on the A4123 Birmingham New Road in Coseley[1], which was shut today (June 8) in both directions following the incident.

Paramedics rushed to the scene at 9.36am however nothing could be done to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. West Midlands Police[2] has detained a man, who is helping officers with enquiries.

The incident happened at the junction with Mason Street, with congestion in the area and motorists facing delays to their journeys on one of the Black Country's busiest roads. Follow our latest updates here.[3]

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Birmingham New Road has been closed in Coseley following a serious collision this morning. Police were called at 9.38am following a collision involving a lorry on the main road near Roseville.

"An elderly male pedestrian was seriously injured. The road is currently closed between Mason Street near to Silver Jubilee Park to Ivyhouse Lane, close to the McDonalds.

"A man has been detained by police and will be helping with our enquiries. Any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who has dashcam or CCTV footage, should contact police on 101, quoting log number 1175 of 8/6/23."

West Midlands Ambulance Service[5] later confirmed the man had tragically died. A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "A pedestrian has unfortunately died following a road traffic collision on Birmingham New Road this morning.

"West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Birmingham New Road, Coseley in Bilston at 9.36am to a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian. Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene.

"Upon arrival, staff found a man who was the pedestrian. Unfortunately, it was immediately clear that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene. The driver of the lorry did not require treatment."

The bus services 8 and X8 have been diverted.
