Bin lorry forced to shed waste after fire in back of truck
A bin lorry was forced to dump its contents onto the road after the waste caught fire in the truck. A recycling crew with Stratford-on-Avon District Council was carrying out a round in King Johns Road, Kineton, when their lorry caught fire on Wednesday.
A disposable barbecue put into a blue-lidded recycling bin was understood to have ignited and caused a fire in the back of the vehicle. Over four tonnes of recycling had to be tipped into the road as firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Fortunately, the crew were unhurt in the fire on Wednesday (June 7) and the vehicle was not damaged, but the situation could have been so much worse, a council spokesperson said. Residents across the district are now being reminded about the dangers of disposable barbecues.
Lorraine Grocott, the council’s environmental and neighbourhood services chief, said: “This incident is extremely concerning and put a number of people at risk. I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the importance of disposing of waste properly and advise people to follow the instructions on disposable barbecues of how you can safely dispose of them.”
Disposable barbecues and hot coals can take up to 48 hours to fully cool so the public need to ensure they are left for that period or are cooled by soaking them in water. Once cold, they can be disposed of in the general waste.
