The sink hole that closed a major road over the weekend

The crumbling roads of Cheltenham are a bane for any motorists trying to get around town. If a road isn’t pock-marked with pot-holes it’s closed while they are being repaired.

And there was further frustration for fuming motorists over the weekend when a key road had to be closed because of a sink hole[1]. It appeared on the A46 Bath Road outside the landmark Eagle Tower building.

Motorists were told on Saturday evening that the route – a key one into and out of town – was going to be shut over the weekend. People were told to find alternative routes.

Twitter user Tommy Boy kindly shared an image of the sink hole with Gloucestershire Live, saying this was the reason why part of Bath Road was closed off. The road was not marked as being closed this morning (Monday).

On Saturday, Gloucestershire Highways said: “Good afternoon, A46 Bath Rd, Chelt – outside Eagle Tower – is closed due to a sink hole appearing. The road will remain closed over the weekend.

“Please find alternative routes in this area. Thank you.”
