Twelve in hospital as double decker bus crashes into railway bridge and has roof torn off in Glasgow

Twelve people are in hospital in Glasgow[3] after a double decker bus crashed into a railway bridge and lost its roof.

The First Bus double-decker became trapped under a railway bridge near the O2 venue on Cook Street around 11.35am and its roof was sliced off.

Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene and Network Rail Scotland supported emergency crews.

The casualties were taken to three different hospitals, while others were treated at the scene. It is understood there are no life-threatening injuries.

Train services between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street were temporarily suspended until it was deemed safe to resume operations.

Roads around the incident in the city’s south side remained cordoned off yesterday afternoon as emergency crews remained in the area.

Ch Insp Elaine Tomlinson, of Police Scotland’s Greater Glasgow Division, said: ‘Around 11.35am on Sunday, 21 May, 2023, we received a report of a bus crashing into a bridge on Cook Street, Glasgow.

‘Emergency services attended and 10 people were taken to various hospitals for treatment.

‘A number of road closures remain in place, with disruption to some rail services.

‘I would like to thank the public for their co-operation and ask they continue to avoid the area while enquires are ongoing.’

Bus company First Bus confirmed it was one of its own vehicles which was involved in the crash.

A company spokesperson said: ‘We are working closely with the emergency services at the scene and our thoughts are with those involved in the incident.’

The rail infrastructure agency said: ‘We’re assisting the emergency services, who are responding to a bus trapped beneath a bridge between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street.

‘We need to complete a safety inspection of the bridge before trains can use it again. We can only do this once the bus has been removed.’
