Roof sliced off Glasgow double decker bus in railway bridge crash

Images have revealed the extent of the damage that occurred when a bus collided with a railway bridge in Glasgow.

The collision occurred in the south side[1] of Glasgow near Cook Street, throwing train services[2] between Glasgow and Paisley into chaos today.

A major emergency response[3] was activated following the collision, with police in attendance at the scene alongside Network Rail staff.

Images shared by the rail firm shows the extent of the damage, with the bus trapped under the bridge and the entire top of the vehicle appearing to have been ripped off.

A statement from Network Rail on Twitter reads: “We’re assisting the emergency services, who are responding to a bus trapped beneath a bridge between Glasgow Central & Paisley Gilmour Street. We need to complete a safety inspection of the bridge before trains can use it again, we can only do this once the bus has been removed.”

Sharing the image, they added: “This is what we’re dealing with right now. No trains can run between Glasgow Central & Paisley Gilmour St in either direction until our engineers have checked that the bridge is safe to reopen. They can only do this once the bus has been removed.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.35am on Sunday, 21 May, 2023, officers received a report of a bus crashing into a bridge on Cook Street, Glasgow.

“Emergency services are in attendance and a number of road closures are in place.

“The public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.”

The extent of any injuries is not known at this time.
