Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after M23 crash involving lorry – recap
A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital with "serious injuries" this afternoon (May 22) after a crash on the M23 shortly before 1.30pm. It followed a collision between the M25 and Gatwick Airport which was described by National Highways as "serious" and that involved a lorry.
A spokesperson from Surrey Police said: "At 1.22pm police were called to a collision between a motorbike and a lorry on the M23[1] southbound between Junction 8 and Junction 9. The motorcyclist was taken to St. George’s Hospital by air ambulance for treatment for serious injuries. Both carriageways were closed to facilitate the arrival and departure of the air ambulance."
Traffic was held for around an hour on the southbound carriageway before the incident. The northbound carriageway was also briefly shut to allow an air ambulance to land a the scene. Traffic was reported in nearby areas including Redhill[2] and Reigate[3] as drivers diverted around the closure.
National Highways first reported the incident and said: “We’re getting reports of a serious collision on the M23 southbound between J8 (M25) and J9 Gatwick Airport[4] involving a motorbike.
